BLOG: RIP My Hot Beef Stew

Sunday.

I am functioning with exactly one brain cell today, so bear with me as we try to get through this post.

Okay. Um. Right. What are words? We don’t know.

This is why I don’t drink Guinness. I drank exactly one glass of it last night and now I don’t remember who I am. Jaysus. I’m sure that all of the other drinks I had before and after have nothing to do with this at all.

I went out with my friend last night for the Six Nations Ireland-Scotland game. We decided to go to a different bar than last week. The bar we went to last week was all business people who like rugby. The bar we went to last night was full of lads who actually play a game close to rugby, more commonly known as Gaelic Football. If you don’t know what that is, rest assured that neither do I. It’s an Irish thing. I’ve never even seen this shit before in my entire life. I didn’t even know it existed until about a month ago. Believe me when I say…

So many GAA lads. The bar was full of GAA lads.

Oh my god.

Oh my god!

So there I was, enjoying the scenery, and then I saw a very familiar face. A little too familiar.

This guy looked like a miniature version of the Hot Beef Stew. He was much smaller in stature, but still pretty beefy, and his hair was not as curly. I could not stop staring at him in spite of my best efforts. There was just something so familiar about him. Not just the fact that he reminded me of the Hot Beef Stew. Something else. I just couldn’t put my finger on what it was.

It wasn’t until after I drank the pint of Guinness that a horrifying realization came over me: this guy looks almost exactly like my cousin on my dad’s side. You know, my Irish side…

Then I sat there in horror for about five minutes like, “Did I hook up with a guy who looks like my cousin?!”

A little voice (no doubt belonging to that goddamn Loch Ness Monster) popped into my head and said, “Ayyyy, lassie, yer a real Guinness Mistress now!”

What in the fuck?!

Worst St. Patrick’s Day gift ever!

No more Guinness for me. It is a mysterious drink with magical powers I don’t understand. That happens once, it doesn’t happen again.

And that’s the story of how my obsession with my Hot Beef Stew died on the floor right in front of me at the Six Nations tournament. He drowned in a vat of Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day, surrounded by all the lads from the GAA. He would have wanted it this way, I know it.

The End.

Somehow I can’t escape the feeling that this is somehow the most Irish thing ever. It is a small island, after all…

Meanwhile, my friend who I was with was laughing so hard, she was crying. She was like, “You are so fucking FUNNY! You should do stand-up comedy!”

“That’s actually my secret dream. I want to be a stand-up comedian and create my own Netflix show. I know that sounds crazy, but…”

My friend looked at me like I had three heads.

“That’s not crazy at all! You could do it! That’s how a lot of people start out. They do stand-up comedy, then become writers, and then eventually they get their own show. You could do it! I would watch it!”

“Really?”

“Of course!”

She then gave me the name of a place here in HK that has an open mic night for stand-up comedy. I think I might actually go and try it out. I just have to write a script first…

After the game, we went over to a gay club around the corner. They were having a drag show. The show was… messy. She tried to do some weird stage game and it just didn’t land. I got up on stage because she asked for volunteers and played along anyway, just for fun. I realized in that moment how much I love to be on stage in front of an audience. I felt so happy in that moment.

When I got down and went back to my friend, she said, “You could have put on a way better show than that.”

I agree. I’ve been to many drag shows in my life. That was by far the weakest performance I’ve ever seen. She had everything going for her, but the routine just didn’t land. Better luck next time!

We danced for a bit, met a bunch of new people, and then went our separate ways. I had to walk home through LKF, which is a huge party spot in Hong Kong. I stopped at a random 7-11 to get a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of water. I sat down on the curb outside to smoke and was immediately swarmed by 20-something athletes from a variety of sports, all of whom wanted to bang me.

Choices: I have them!

Whoever said women expire at age 30 is clearly delusional and deranged, lol. I feel more like a bottle of expensive, fine wine. I just get better with age!

That reminds me: I watched Louis Theroux’s Inside the Manosphere documentary the other day. I haven’t laughed that hard in a loooooong time. These guys are so fucking sad and pathetic. I haven’t seen that much loser energy concentrated in one place since the last time I was in Bangkok.

Rumor has it that Andrew Tate is in Hong Kong right now. I cannot believe immigration let him in. Unbelievable. The CCP must be keeping tabs on him, just waiting for him to fuck up so they can detain him forever. That’s the only rational explanation I have. I literally cannot even.

Well, that’s about all I’ve got to say today, other than I have the most hilarious Instagram post planned for St. Patrick’s Day. True comedy at its finest right there. Let’s just say… there is going to be a mushroom cloud over Bangkok when all the lads from the American Bar see it. Uncle Jason is going to have a full-on nuclear meltdown. It’s going to be HILARIOUS!!!!

LOL!

I am such a little troll. I can’t help myself. I love watching people’s faces melt off! I just can’t resist messing with them the way they messed with me. It’s the only way to get any respect around here.

Have a fantastic day!

BLOG: Freshen Me Up

Friday.

Currently feeling oddly refreshed after yesterday’s hike up the Peak. Must have been the combination of intense exercise, writing a story, and eating the cheeseburger. Also, I didn’t drink any alcohol yesterday, so that probably helped a lot.

I didn’t sleep as well as I was hoping to, but I also didn’t have another nightmare. Unfortunately, the British Guy (who you may remember from many moons ago as the total fucking jerk the Hot Beef Stew/Mr. Antony rescued me from) was very much a presence. Still gross, as per usual.

Regardless, I woke up feeling like a brand new version of me. Strong, confident, ready to get up off my ass and work. More importantly, motivated to clean up my apartment.

The baristas said I was glowing this morning when I came in. Hmm. Interesting. Okay, so I admit that maybe I needed him more than I thought. Whatever. It’s fine.

Now he can take comfort in knowing he’ll forever be immortalized on the page as both the man who rescued me from that stupid bloody English wanker AND as the man who motivated me to walk up a big hill. Most Irish thing ever. I’m sure he would just thrilled, hahaha. And probably somewhat relieved.

I have to laugh because the combination of the stories about Hermes and Antony really make Uncle Jason look totally paranoid and unhinged IRL. Sorry, what was it you were so upset about me writing again? The world will never know!

Sooo… Antony… you’re pretty grand at this whole “life coach” thing. You’re hired! Same time next week? You know I prefer to schedule our appointments in advance! LMFAO!

Gotta love being Betsey Horton, Writer Extraordinaire!

I realize that I’m pumping this shit out at a rate that most people can’t keep up with in the modern era. Attention spans are pretty low these days thanks to TikTok slop. Still, I keep at it in the hopes I can get something out of it someday.

It’s amusing for me these days to see depictions of writers in media who write one short story, agonize over it for years, and refuse to show anyone out of fear. No wonder people keep policing me for dumping everything I write onto my blog. I just grind this shit out. Normal people can’t keep up with my neurodivergent superhuman strength.

I can sit down and write a post in less than an hour, churn it out, and be done. Definitely going for quantity over quality at the moment, but that’s only because I had the worst writer’s block during the pandemic and after my dad died. I didn’t write anything for like 5 years. Now I’ve gotta make up for lost time by meeting as many ridiculous people as possible, having as many experiences as I can, and writing it all down.

I am in such a weird position in life right now. I know this is who I am and what I want to do for the rest of my life. However, I also know the financial question is real, and that I have a hard time working with/for other people because I tend to be targeted and bullied for my neurodivergence. It takes a significant toll on my mental health. So I just need to figure out how to be a writer and support myself.

Men will say, “Just get married!” And in the next breath attack me for being “too old and too bitchy and too feminist” or whatever. This is why I say… A Man is Not a Plan! But also, it would be very helpful to me financially if I could find a patron of some sort, but only to pay my rent and feed me. That’s really all I need in life.

Oh, and the occasional shopping trip every once in awhile, which for me tends to look like digging through secondhand bins for unique pieces, not racking up $50k at the nearest designer store. I think those big designers are so overrated these days, especially after living in Hong Kong. Most people are carrying Super Clones or wearing fakes. You can only tell the difference if you’re snobby and look too close. It’s just some dumb status thing, which is really just a way of trying to elevate oneself above everyone else. I’m not about that life.

At the end of the day, it’s like… who cares? I would be perfectly happy with a Birkin Super Clone straight from the Chinese factory line. I’m not gonna play their “Spend more money so we can put you on the 10-year waitlist for a bag, only to offer you one in a color you don’t want and kick you off the list if you don’t take it” game.

That is the dumbest fucking shit I’ve ever heard in my life. Sure, I could do that, or I could just save time and money by digging through secondhand shops until I find one on my own. Who really gives a fuck? It’s just a bag. You’re supposed to use it to carry all your shit around every day, not put it in a glass case to display in your closet like a rare artifact in a museum. What is that?

All of that being said, I do kinda wish I could do the Guinness Mistress thing. It’s a job, with perks, like a seaside cottage in Ireland! No, seriously, it’s a good arrangement. I get a place to live rent-free where I can write and only have to deal with a man part-time. Don’t have to have kids, don’t have to play house, don’t have to take on any responsibilities. Maybe I just get a little dog and a cat. Dream life right there!

Haha, I’m just kidding. We all know I’ve had “relationships” with married men before. They were not fun. They did not feel good. It’s not fun to play second fiddle to someone else. Also, neither of them was giving me anything back for my trouble. They weren’t paying my rent or taking care of me in any real, meaningful way. They weren’t supporting my writing career. They were just using me and I let them take, take, take because I have ZERO boundaries and no idea how to actually conduct myself in a healthy relationship.

I guess my experience with my various gentlemen callers in Bangkok was supposed to teach me that. It was definitely supposed to teach me some kind of lesson. Anyway, we’ll just call that era of my life “my slutty phase” and be done with it. Time to find someone who is serious and proper and will treat me with the kindness and respect I deserve.

Lol, it’s a nice fantasy. We all know what men are like in reality. Most of them are just… straight-up energy vampires. All they do is drain the life out of me. That’s why I started taking their essence for myself and using it to inspire my stories and characters. They have no qualms about taking from me, so I just take from them right back. Gotta get something out of this, after all!

This is also the reason why I hate it when men give me the “Caveman Speech” about how men are natural providers and women need to stay at home in the cave. I say, “Okay, so pay my tab. If you’re such a natural provider, then fucking Provide!” They always, ALWAYS have a meltdown over “gold diggers” or try to flip the script by saying, “Well you’re such a feminist, so pay for yourself!”

Okay, you can’t have it both ways. Either you go out there and bring me home a fucking mammoth, or you shut the fuck up. I don’t want to hear it anymore.

That’s why I don’t care about all these dumb men in Bangkok who bitch about my writing. Every single one of them would use me for sex and discard me the next day if they had the chance. Now they get to experience being used and discarded for creative purposes instead. Amazing how I don’t feel sorry for any of them! Next time don’t be doing so much of your thinking with your dick!

Anyway, I need to go now. I have an apartment to clean and errands to run. Let’s see how much I actually get done…

BLOG: My Latest Obsession

Friday afternoon.

Woke up late today because I stayed up late last night doing yoga on my rooftop under the full moon, as one does. It was not my best session. I haven’t done my Hatha routine in awhile so I am not in good shape! I need to start going to class again. I can’t live my life like this.

Had a long chat with my brother yesterday. He told me he doesn’t want me to travel anywhere until things calm down. I agree. I promised him I would stay in Hong Kong until my visa expires (unless I magically get a new one). It is my understanding that the airport here has become a nightmare because so many flights are being re-routed through the hub. I think most major international airports are a nightmare right now.

Once again, my plans to visit both Vietnam and India (again) have been derailed. Alas. I am clearly meant to be where I am right now, so I will be here where I am right now.

I was sad when I talked to him. I just wanted to get on a plane and go see him, but I can’t. Not right now. We just have to wait it out and see what happens.

In the meantime, I checked on my friends who got stuck in the UAE. One of them got on a flight back to their home country yesterday. The other is still stuck. I sent her some info on how to cross the border into Oman and get out through Muscat just in case.

Then I saw the news that Krusty Gnome had been fired and rejoiced on behalf of all dogs everywhere. Pretty sure Trump only replaced her with a Native American because his dementia-ridden brain saw that t-shirt they sell with the vintage photos of Natives reading “Department of Homeland Security.” But you know what? I’ll take it.

Otherwise, I spent my evening in bed eating pizza and watching Netflix. I finally got around to watching that documentary about Jimmy Savile. I didn’t care for the style. I don’t think it focused enough on the survivors and their stories. It also didn’t delve as deep into his crimes as it could have, nor did it look into his connections with the Royals (especially Prince Andrew). The vast majority was focused on the whole “But we thought he was such a good guy!” Narrative. Ugh, please. They’re always a good guy, until they’re not.

So over it.

I needed something more lighthearted after that so I started re-watching House of Guinness. I know it’s not meant to be a comedy, but it is. I already thought this show was completely ridiculous and absurd the first time around. It is even more ridiculous and absurd now that I have spent time around actual Irish people and started learning about Irish culture and history. Still, I find it hilarious, so I will continue my re-watch. I need to get myself hyped up for the Six Nations this weekend.

My friend and I are planning to go out tomorrow and watch the France-Scotland game. I know the Ireland game is on today but I still haven’t found a place to watch it because it’s on at like 3am here. I asked around but no one is showing it because of licensing issues. Disappointing AF.

Anyway, I am just happy to go out and have a proper girls night. I love my guy friends, but I get really fucking tired of being surrounded by men all the time. I might be “one of the lads,” as they say, but I am a woman, and I need to be around other women sometimes. Women understand things that men are literally incapable of understanding. Plus, it is WAY more fun to watch rugby with other women. I don’t have to pretend like I give a fuck about the rules of this sport or what is actually happening in the game. I can just admire the beauty of the male form.

Plus, I just want to stop fixating on the Hot Beef Stew. I’m so over the whole situation. I literally do not care anymore. He’s a liar and a cheater and a slut. That’s it. That’s The End! No more story to tell! I got to tell him to go fuck himself in a dream and that was resolution enough for me. I have bigger fish to fry.

My friend saw my joke posts about rugby and asked if I want to go with her to the Hong Kong Sevens in April. Uhhhh, yeahhhhhh! Obviously! I don’t even know what that is. Don’t know, don’t care. All I know is that there are gonna be hot sexy beefcakes in tight shorts running around a muddy field. Sign me up! I am all over it.

And here I thought being a sports reporter was the most boring job ever! Wrong! I should try to get that job. Why am I even wasting my time doing anything else? I could be interviewing these guys about their workout routines right now! And by interviewing, I mean watching them drag each other all over the field. So hot. Wow. How did this sport even get invented?

Okay, I gotta go home now. I am not feeling well today. I need to conserve my energy for tomorrow night. So ready. Soooo ready. Never been more ready for anything in my entire life.

Show me the grass stains!

BLOG: Hope U Get Rich

Saturday morning. At the coffee stand. I always miss this place the most when I am gone from here. I love my perfect little writing spot. I have yet to find one in HK.

As much as I wanted to run away from life, once again my decision to become a HongKonger came back to bite me in the ass. It was as if a metaphorical Grab driver came into the bar yesterday holding a red envelope just for me. When I opened it said, “We Own You. Time for you to come back! With Love, HKSAR.”

In reality this message came in the form of my friend, who I have been jokingly calling my “Chinese Minder” since he’s all up in my business. I told him I wanted to run off to Vietnam to do yoga on a beach for a month. He told me that I need to grow up and face the reality that I am unemployed on the other side of the planet, that the best career opportunities are in HK, and it would be really stupid to throw away my chance just to bankrupt myself doing nothing.

“I knew it,” he said. “You are too much under the influence of the Thai Expat Community. You can’t stay on vacation forever. You don’t want to. You’re not like them!”

I sat there for awhile with my discomfort and realized he was right. So I re-booked my old apartment in HK for the month of March and now I’m searching for a plane ticket. Apparently the hosts were renovating the place during February, which is why I couldn’t stay there. They were more than happy to put me back up again. It’s not ideal, but the price and the location cannot be beat. Something better will come along when the time is right…

My reward for going back and facing up to the challenge instead of running away is a Chinese New Year Party at the horse racing track. So obnoxiously bougie, I know. I love it. I can’t help myself!

Now we know why I need to get out of the guilded cage once in awhile to run around with all the riff-raff down by the docks. That alleyway scene from House of Guinness sure hits different now, lol! It may not have worked out with my Irish Guy in the long run, but I’ll always remember the night he made me howl like a wild, wild cat at the moon.

If you don’t get it, you don’t get it.

God help me if I ever see that man again. I will not be able to hold it together…

Anyway, enough Lifestyles of the Bang Lads and Degenerates. We must return to Hong Kong and be serious, stylish, and successful. Money in the bank. That’s all that matters right now. Money in the bank. Assuming I acquire said money, I can finally buy my own bar in 20 years and retire comfortably to watch my favourite reality TV show in peace. For now… money. It’s all about the money.

I keep telling myself this is just a strategy game. I’ve got the Wild Card. The rarest tile. The letter worth the most points. Boardwalk and Park Place on the Monopoly board. I just don’t know how to play my hand. At least, I haven’t figured it out yet. I’m just waiting for the right opportunity to come along so I can play it and take all the winnings home.

Gong Hei Fat Choi, indeed.

I hope I get rich…

SCRIPT: Under Surveillance

Disclaimer: This Story is a Work of Fiction, Except for the Parts that Aren’t.

EXT: Daytime — A busy street in Bangkok, Thailand.

A short man with dark hair and a designer messenger bag strapped to his chest hops on a scooter and takes off across town. The scenery changes from local Thai apartments covered in hanging gardens to luxury high-rise condos surrounded by luxury malls to a suburban-style gated community full of large, spacious villas that require staff for upkeep. The guard checks the man’s ID and waves him through the gate. He eventually arrives at his intended destination and parks the scooter outside of an especially lovely-looking villa. As he makes his way towards the front door, a hurried-looking old man in a suit, clearly the BUTLER, comes rushing out the front door.

BUTLER: What are you doing here, Billy? Mr. Antony specifically commanded you not to come here. You know he doesn’t approve of riff raff like you anywhere near his family’s home.

BILLY: [nonchalantly pulls a flash drive out of his bag] Ah, yes, about that. I have some information he wants. It was far too important to be delayin’ now.

BUTLER: What is this regarding?

BILLY: The documents he requested regarding the Lady Elizabeth Catherine from the House of Horton.

BUTLER: Who?

BILLY: Better known by her pen name… Ms. Betsey Horton, Writer Extraordinaire?

BUTLER: And you’re certain this is important enough to visit the house for?

BILLY: Oh, yes. He’s going to want to hear this story. Trust me.

BUTLER: Very well, Billy. I’ll let Mr. Antony know you’re here. Please, wait outside.

BILLY stands outside on the front steps waiting as the gardening crew take turns giving him disapproving looks. He puts his hands in his pockets and starts whistling an old Irish hymn. A few minutes later, the front doors burst open. A handsome gentleman in his 40’s with dark hair and eyes like a storm at sea sticks his head out and glares at BILLY.

ANTONY: I told you to use the back door so no one would see you! Eejit!

BILLY: Well, top o’ the morning to you too.

ANTONY: Get the hell in this house right now before anyone else sees you! You’re lucky my wife isn’t home today!

ANTONY grabs BILLY by the arm and pulls him inside the house. He looks both ways outside before slamming the doors shut. He gives BILLY an annoyed look before leading him to the study, or as we say in the post-pandemic era, the home office. He is just about to slam the door before the BUTLER puts his hand out to stop it.

ANTONY: What is it, Jeeves? What do you want?!

BUTLER: Sorry, sir, just wanting to know if you’ll be needing any tea?

ANTONY: For god’s sake, man, this is no time for tea!

BILLY: You’re right. Better make it a whiskey. You’re going to need it after hearing this.

ANTONY: Very well. Make it a whiskey.

BILLY: Oh, and get us the good stuff, Jeeves. From the family’s private stock!

ANTONY gives BILLY a loathsome look and mutters something under his breath. He exchanges a look with the BUTLER but nods anyway. The BUTLER leaves and returns with the fancy whiskey. They wait until he is gone from the room before speaking to each other again.

ANTONY: Go on now, speak your peace. What did you discover about our Posh Irish-American Lady Friend running around with all that riff raff down by the docks?

BILLY: Generally harmless, as you suspected. She’s just another rich girl out here blowing her inheritance on some kind of Eat, Pray, Love journey. Travels a lot. LA, New York, London, Paris, Dubai, Doha, India, Hong Kong, Bali, Kuala Lumpur. She has a big thing for New Orleans in particular.

ANTONY: New Orleans?

BILLY: That’s right. New Orleans. There’s a large Irish population there.

ANTONY: Interesting. Who does she work for?

BILLY: She doesn’t work, for anyone, or at all in general, as far as I can tell. Her Daddy was taking care of her until he died. She just writes in her little blog and thinks it will make her a real author some day.

ANTONY: Yes, yes, we knew all of that. Tell me what else you found.

BILLY: Now, that’s the interesting part. She herself is not that interesting, but her collection of ex-lovers are.

ANTONY: Go on.

BILLY takes out the flash drive again and hands it over to ANTONY. ANTONY looks at it as if it is a piece of kryptonite glowing in his hand. He downs his glass of whiskey and immediately pours another one before plugging the flash drive into his desktop computer. He sits down in his chair as BILLY stands behind him and begins navigating the file with the mouse. He pulls up a video showing a montage of the writer in question making out with four different men in the same elevator over a period of four months. The first man featured is none other than ANTONY himself.

BILLY: Look, there you are!

ANTONY grabs the mouse and fast-forwards through his section of the montage. He pauses it when the next man comes up to look at his face.

BILLY: That’s the Englishman she was crying over the night you met her. You can see here he visited her there at least twice. I also got footage of them in the bar together from back in August. You can see they didn’t talk for very long before leaving together.

ANTONY: Who is he?

BILLY: No one, really. Just some freelance web developer guy who got roped into taking care of a local water buffalo farm.

ANTONY: [scoffs and shakes his head as he continues moving the cursor through the video] And who is this one?

BILLY: Ah, Panama Guy. I also have footage of her in the condo building down the street the same night, and at the bar all week. He’s some American military contractor type on vacation. Not in town long.

ANTONY: And this one?

BILLY: That’s her Mexican Guy. It was easy to track him down. He’s just some cruise ship sound tech guy. Also on vacation.

ANTONY: Also a no one. You came all this way to waste my time for THIS?!

BILLY: Now, now, calm yourself down there, buddy boy. There’s more.

BILLY clicks out of the montage and pulls up a new file. It’s a whole folder with the designated name, “Indian Guy.” BILLY opens it to reveal a series of photos of a young, handsome Indian man shaking hands with some of the biggest BJP Party leaders in India today. A video clip shows him riding in a brand-new Jeep with party flags being waved through a highway checkpoint somewhere outside of New Delhi. There is also a series of photographs of his mother, a former politician for the BJP Party, engaged in various political activities, surrounded by the same prominent collection of leaders. ANTONY stares at the computer screen in horror as his jaw drops open.

BILLY: According to her blog, this was the man she was engaged to marry.

ANTONY: Did she know about this when she entered into the agreement?

BILLY: I don’t think she did, no. It’s hard to say. It’s hard to tell what she knows, what she’s pretending to know, and what she doesn’t know. She’s a very good bullshitter. Americans are like that, ya know.

ANTONY: She told me she met him at a yoga retreat.

BILLY: She did. I believe she fell for Ye Olde Indian Marriage Scamme.

ANTONY: That’s… actually pretty sad.

BILLY: It really is.

ANTONY: She must be very lonely.

BILLY: She is.

ANTONY: How do you know that?

BILLY: I’ve been watching her Instagram stories the last few days.

ANTONY: I see. And just how many more of these gentlemen are there?

BILLY: See, now that’s where the story gets interesting. Everything I just showed you? That’s just from this year. The Personal Data Package I paid for got me the password to her blog archives. I could see everything she has hidden on there. Her website is ten years old! There’s thousands of stories on there.

ANTONY: Thousands?

BILLY: That’s right. Thousands.

ANTONY: And what about this other bar? This Bloody Mary’s place? What did you find out about this Andrew character?

BILLY moves the mouse and clicks on the file labeled “Bloody Mary’s.” A photo of a dingy old dive bar with a distinctly Irish name flashes up on the screen. It is followed by photos of the town of Vermillion and the University of South Dakota. A montage of photos shows Betsey Horton sitting in the bar with a frail old man wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, laughing as the handsome bartender looks on from afar with a saddened look. The next photo shows her and the bartender looking directly at each other from across the room, holding their gaze on each other a little too long to be considered proper or appropriate.

ANTONY: Is that her Andrew?

BILLY: Yes, sir. That’s her Andrew.

ANTONY: What did you get on him?

BILLY: His real name is [redacted]. He’s Big Money. Wife is a Doctor. He just sold the bar last year. Moved to a different state with his family. Here they are now.

The image on the screen changes to a wholesome family photo taken in front of a beautiful restored farm house out in a random field somewhere. ANTONY looks it over and makes a face.

ANTONY: She said they weren’t together. What did you find out?

BILLY: Again, it’s hard to say. What I can tell you is that she was writing stories about him and the bar every day for about two years before it became a ‘problem’ and he banned her for life from the bar.

ANTONY: Because of the stories, not because they had a relationship?

BILLY looks ANTONY up and down and clicks his tongue.

BILLY: I don’t know about that one, Boss. Like I said, it’s very hard to say. But I can show this video, which was taken about two years after she was banned.

BILLY pulls up another montage. This one shows Betsey sitting at a proper Irish Pub down the street, playing bar games with a bunch of local townie riff raff and taking way too many shots. By the end of the montage, she is clearly not herself anymore. She disappears from the bar and reappears in the next scene on police bodycam footage, standing behind Bloody Mary’s, clearly drunk out of her right mind and sporting purple hair.

OFFICER: Ma’am, we received a report that you were out her vandalizing the bar.

BETSEY: I’m just writing in my notebook.

OFFICER: Can we check the contents of your bag, ma’am?

Betsey sits down on the ground and promptly starts removing a pile of notebooks, folders, pens, and devices from her large suitcase-like bag. Even in her clearly blackout state, she still takes the time to explain the contents of each folder. The officers can be heard on the police-cam footage exchanging the following words:

OFFICER 1: I don’t see any spray paint in there. No chalk, no nothing. There’s no graffiti on the fence or the sidewalk or anywhere. I don’t see anything like the call we received.

OFFICER 2: No, the call clearly stated she was out her writing graffiti. I don’t see anything like that. It must be someone making a false report.

OFFICER 1: She is very drunk though.

OFFICER 2: Yeah.

OFFICER 1: Okay, ma’am, ma’am, it’s time for you to go home now. Can we take you home?

BETSEY: No, it’s fine, I’ll just get back there myself. Thank you!

The bodycam footage shuts off. The two sit together in silence for a moment.

ANTONY: Is there more?

BILLY: Oh, there’s more.

Right at the moment, the BUTLER knocks on the door and sticks his head into the study.

BUTLER: Sir, your appointment is here.

ANTONY looks at the computer, looks at the BUTLER, looks at BILLY, looks back at the computer, and then looks back at the BUTLER.

ANTONY: Cancel my meeting, Jeeves. It turns out this is an emergency after all.

BUTLER: But sir-

ANTONY: Don’t argue with me, Jeeves. Just go and get us another bottle of whiskey. The good kind this time, please.

BILLY: Ah, I knew ya had it in ya!

ANTONY: Shut up, Billy. Jeeves, the whiskey!

BUTLER: As you say, sir.

The BUTLER leaves again and returns with a second, better-quality bottle of whiskey. ANTONY practically grabs it out of his hands and pours himself a stiff glass before the next video plays.

BILLY: So this one was taken about two years after that one.

ANTONY watches as Betsey walks up outside the bar and sets up a bright pink fold-up chair in the middle of the street outside. The street has been blocked off to make outdoor seating for the pandemic. She sits downs in the chair, takes out her notebook and starts scribbling away with a smile on her face. In the background, he can see a crowd gathering inside the bar by the window, making a big commotion about her presence. In the next clip they watch as two police officers dressed in full military riot gear run up the sidewalk and grab her. They watch her fighting back with every ounce of her being as they drag her inside the police vehicle. Andrew steps outside the bar and starts ranting at the police officer about how she has been trespassed from the property. Inside the vehicle, they can see Betsey screaming as she tries to pull her wrists out of the handcuffs.

BETSEY: LET ME GO! LET ME FUCKING GO! THIS IS A VIOLATION OF MY FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS TO FREEDOM OF SPEECH, FREEDOM OF PRESS, AND FREEDOM OF ASSEMBLY TO AIR MY GRIEVANCES AGAINST THIS FUCKED UP BULLSHIT! YOU CAN’T DO THIS! YOU DIDN’T READ ME MY MIRANDA RIGHTS OR TELL ME WHY I AM BEING DETAINED. I WANT TO TALK TO MY LAWYER! GET ME MY LAWYER! GET ME MY FUCKING LAWYER RIGHT NOW! AHHHHHHHHH!!!! I WANT MY LAWYER!

BILLY watches as ANTONY’s jaw drops to the floor in total and complete shock. He pauses the video right at the perfect moment to capture Betsey’s face looking like a wild, wild cat howling at the moon.

ANTONY: Woah.

BILLY: [cheerfully] See, I told ya she was Irish!

ANTONY: [downs another glass of whiskey and pours them both another] Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. She’s Irish, alright.

BILLY: I respect her. She’s got that Irish fire inside. That lass wasn’t about to go down without a proper fight. I respect the fuck outta her for that.

ANTONY: And what became of this mess?

BILLY: According to the court documents, her daddy bailed her out. Again.

ANTONY: And how many times has he done that?

BILLY: Well, that’s the thing. She’s a good girl otherwise. Generally well-behaved. A right proper Lady, I would say, as she was raised to be. The only other thing I could find in the police files was this.

BILLY pulls up a series of PDF’s detailing the arrest of a man for assaulting Betsey. His identification page shows him to be the spoiled, arrogant son of a local businessman and politician. The police report describes an encounter where Betsey’s “sometimes boyfriend” threw her across the room into a wall during an argument they had while lying in bed naked together. The file includes a medical report taken from the hospital that morning, a protection order, and a court report detailing the case being dropped due to Rich White Male Privilege.

ANTONY: Wow. She really knows how to pick ’em, huh?

BILLY: So it would seem.

ANTONY: And what else is there?

BILLY pulls up the last file, labeled “Mental Health Report.”

BILLY: Some of this was harder to find, but I managed. It’s all from before she turned 21. She was hospitalized for multiple suicide attempts as a teenager and drugged up on pharmaceuticals for several years before and after. It seemed to stop when she became an adult, because there’s no records of her receiving any kind of significant treatment for any mental health conditions after she turned 22. Apparently she’s a yoga teacher now.

ANTONY: I see. And you’re telling me this is everything you were able to find out about this woman? There’s nothing more?

BILLY: Eh, a couple more boyfriends here and there. Most recently, a rich married guy who she helped get a divorce, a New York Times bestselling author who owns a restaurant she used to work at, and a secret one I couldn’t find any information about. Less recently, an older guy who took advantage of her when she was young, one of her teachers, some asshole who cheated on her a bunch of times and left her unable to love anyone the same way ever again.

ANTONY: I see. Sad.

BILLY: And what say you about this information, sir?

ANTONY: I’m not sure what to say right now, Billy. Thank you for bringing me this information. I’ll forgive your unwelcome intrusion into the family household. For now. Don’t think you’re welcome back here again.

BILLY: And what is it you intend to do, sir?

ANTONY: I have no idea. Just… mind after her for now.

BILLY: Pardon me for saying so, sir, but you know I have my own sick water buffalo to tend to at home. I can’t just be minding after your girlfriends for free.

ANTONY scoffs and rolls his eyes. He gets up from the desk, walks over to the bookshelf and pulls out the book that opens the secret door to the safe. He grabs a duffle bag full of cash and throws it at BILLY.

ANTONY: That should be enough to cover the cost of the data file your purchased, the information you brought me today, and whatever future work you do.

BILLY: As you say, sir. Thank you, sir. I won’t be disappointing you now, sir.

ANTONY: Just get out, Billy. You’ve given me enough information for today.

BILLY: Just one last thing, sir. The Lady herself requested I ask you one thing.

ANTONY: Oh? And what is that?

BILLY: [pulls out a post-it note from his messenger bag and clears his throat] “How does it feel to cancel a meeting to deal with me?”

ANTONY immediately freezes and looks up at BILLY in shock as the realization slowly washes over him that he’s been had.

BILLY: [smirks and looks back down at the post- it note] The Lady suggests that next time, you schedule an appointment specifically for her in order to avoid any unwelcome intrusions into your private time.

ANTONY: GET OUT!

BILLY laughs, folds up the note, and sticks it back into his bag. He finishes his whiskey, puts his hands in his pockets, and whistles as he walks out of the villa and back to his bike. He barely registers the sound of the door slamming behind him as he goes. He gets on his scooter with his giant bag of money and takes off into the mountains far away.

The End
