BLOG: Just Say No To Finance Bros

Saturday.

I am ridiculously hungover after my little adventure out in Central yesterday afternoon. I don’t even know how in the fuck this happened, but it happened.

Where to start?

As previously mentioned, last Sunday I got sucked into a random bar by the Escalator by a group MAusGAs. While I was there, I met a man from Mexico who worked in finance. I gave him my number. Yesterday, he messaged me around 2pm and asked if I wanted to meet him at a different place for Happy Hour.

I decided to go meet him, because why not go meet a rich guy for drinks, right? After all, how bad could it really be? Surely not all finance bros live their lives like Wolf of Wall Street, right?

Wrong.

This is how I ended up in the situation I ended up in.

At first, the date seemed promising. He talked about working in London and going skydiving when he turned 40. He showed me a few art pieces he was thinking about buying for his $100,000 HKD per month apartment and showed me pictures of the terrace. I talked about living in a tiny little studio and being a penniless writer. He said he would introduce me to some people who could help me find a job. You know, just normal Hong Kong things.

As we were talking, I noticed a lot of people passing by and saying hello to him. All of them were giving me strange looks. I thought it was because I was new. I was wrong.

Later on, his friends started showing up and coming over to the table to say hello. He left me to chat with his friends while he went to take a business call. Three of them were Irish. One of them was giving big time Slytherin vibes.

Have you ever looked at someone and instantly knew they were in Slytherin House? Like they are just pure evil at heart and they know it and somehow it’s kinda hot? That was this Irish guy. He kept looking at me the same way Uncle Jason would look at me in Bangkok. Like he was thinking to himself, “This woman is here to make trouble for us and I don’t like it.”

Things started getting pretty crazy after the Finance Bro got back. While I was having a side conversation with one of his friends, a particularly shady-looking individual cozied up to the Finance Bro and slipped him something discreetly.

Suddenly, The Finance Bro grabbed me by the hand and pulled me away from the table and towards the bathroom. He motioned for me to follow him into the men’s bathroom. Just like that, right there, in broad daylight, in the middle of the whole restaurant, and in front of my special Parisian scarf.

There was an older Indian woman waiting in line outside the women’s room. We both gave each other a look like, “Is he gonna whip his dick out?” She gave me a nod like she would be waiting for me outside.

Of course I had to know what he was going to show me in the bathroom. Of course I did. Luckily, it was not his dick. It was a vial of cocaine that he opened and started making lines out of right on the toilet of this public men’s bathroom! EWWWW! Gross!

I was like, “Bro, you’re rich. You don’t have to do this. A toilet? Really? That’s sick. Grow up and invest in a compact mirror. I don’t even do cocaine and even I know it’s the must-have accessory of the season.”

I refused the line and walked out of the bathroom. The Indian woman looked at me expectantly.

“I didn’t see anything,” I said calmly.

She nodded at me understandingly, as if this was something she was used to seeing every day. She let me go ahead of her to the bathroom so I could have a chance to calm down. When I came out, he was standing outside the door waiting for me. He grabbed me and tried to kiss me. Right there in broad daylight, in front of the whole restaurant, and in front of my special Parisian scarf!

I pushed him off of me and said, “What the fuck, dude? What kind of woman do you think I am?”

I walked back over to the table to finish my drink. He came back over and said, “Sorry I can’t take you to dinner. My girlfriend is at home waiting for me.”

Wow. Just fucking Wow.

“Does your girlfriend know you kiss her with the same mouth that was just an inch away from a public toilet seat?”

Fucking gross.

He left me there alone, surrounded by his friends, most of whom either ignored me completely or wanted to explain to me why they think Trump should be the King of Australia and Canada, which is honestly just fucking insane.

Many drinks later, I finally extracted myself from this ridiculous situation and walked home alone. I stopped by McDonald’s to get something to eat. I stood there staring at the ground while I waited for my food. I felt empty and sad as the realization set in that I had basically just been assaulted, again, and it did not feel very good.

I missed Bangkok in that moment. Yeah, I acted slutty, but at least everyone involved was consenting and having a good time. And yeah, those expat guys were all pretty ridiculous, but at least none of them ever invited me to do a line of cocaine off of a public toilet seat. That’s just nasty!

I woke up today with a massive hangover and the same feeling of emptiness inside. I thought to myself that maybe it’s a sign I should go to Ireland after all…

Now I am just sitting here processing what happened. I know, I know, I’m sure that I come off as really naive right now, but I am just not a person who is heavily involved in drug culture like that. I never have been. In my mind, this only happens in movies. Surely no one is actually trashy enough to do lines of coke off of a public toilet seat. Oh, right, I guess they are.

Okay, so, that happened. Time for me to reward myself for dealing with that ridiculous situation with a rice bowl. Hell yes.

Onward and forward…

BLOG: Reality vs Faerie Land

Friday.

How am I today? Oh, I just feel like I’m drowning, as per usual. I try to always remember what my favourite little group of expats in Thailand would say: “The first year away is always the hardest. You’re still caught up in all the shit you left behind. You still don’t know who you are or where you are or what you’re even doing. But rest assured, you’ll find your way around in time, just like the rest of us did.”

I don’t feel like I’m finding my way. I feel like I’m way in over my head and I have no idea what I’ve gotten myself into.

This week I have definitely felt the weight of my old life weighing upon me. I don’t know why I am getting so triggered by everything this week. I just keep having flashbacks and night terrors about the situations and people I left behind. I’m just not on my A-game right now.

I should be more excited than I am. Unfortunately, I can only think of how upset and angry my family will be, and wonder how they will conspire to sabotage it, and how I am going to manifest the money I need to chase this relatively new dream.

I feel very conflicted right now. I’ve struggled so hard to find a place in Hong Kong just to live and now I’m just going to give it up so I can run off somewhere new and take the exact same gamble on housing and employment to pursue a degree that I have no real way to pay for?

Well, I guess the way I’ve seen it, there is no pay off in this world anymore. You just have to do what you have to do to survive.

It’s just hard. I feel like every day I’m just sitting there like, “I know there is more to life than sitting on rooftops sipping wine and writing about all of the ridiculous people I randomly meet. I just don’t know how to switch out of this mode into money-making mode. My only real skill other than writing and creative, critical thinking is making drinks. What am I doing here? What am I doing anywhere? Everywhere I go, it will always be the same.”

If only I could wrangle me one of these hot fintech bros that keep walking by and then I would never have to worry about money ever again. I could just have a nice apartment with a roof of my own located somewhere within and just write. Alas, they look good on the outside, but the reality is they are all just one ketamine-fueled crash out away from ending up on the street.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. I had to stop checking out Neighbor Guy after I saw some chick carrying a bag of takeout go into his apartment the other day. She had a key. So now I’ve just started avoiding him by taking the stairwells again. Always the same story with these guys, isn’t it? I really must see that witch under the bridge about breaking whatever curse this is.

Well, I’ve checked on flight prices and they’re not great. If I want to fly to the US and then to Dublin, it’s like $1500-$2000 and I have to deal with ALL of the insanity. Upside: 12 hour layover in Tokyo, which I’ve never been to.

Meanwhile, good guy Ireland is keeping flight prices to Dublin from SEA very low. I’m looking at $500-$800 there, depending on which hub I go through.

Istanbul is probably best. They probably just fly over Mainland China and then up through the Stans. Skip the GCC entirely. That’s a hell of a flight though. And I don’t get the luxuries of Emirates or Qatar Airways for the long-haul. Disappointing.

I just don’t know what else to do. I’m not getting anywhere with my job hunt. AI just eats my applications. Besides, I have terrible luck with jobs. I always end up working for and with the worst people. Starbucks is the brightest, shiniest example. I will never forget how my co-workers treated me after my father died. Pure human garbage, the whole lot of them. I am convinced that most of Gen-Z is dysfunctional and rotten to the core.

So now I am trying to work through my actual, literal fear of going back to work after what happened with Starbucks and with the South African company that brought me to HK in the first place. I really have terrible anxiety about working with other people now. I’m just afraid I will be targeted and vilified for defending myself and then I have to sit back and watch as my source of income and health insurance is ripped away, yet again, just so someone else can make some kind of temporary gains.

So I do realize that people in the corporate world only get increasingly more psychotic from here. The world we live in is a terrible place. I just don’t want to be around monstrous people like that anymore. Like I literally just cannot do it. I have no tolerance for it anymore. It’s so much easier to just hide in my room and sleep and pretend the world doesn’t exist outside of my blog or my notebook.

I know it’s a problem. I just don’t know how to solve it. I only know that I’m out here all on my own and that I am the only person who can solve it. I’m just… not solving it. I don’t think I want to solve it. I think I just want to hop that flight to Ireland and run away to a magical fairy land where I can write in a castle overlooking the sea.

Yes, right, that sounds very realistic, Betsey. Let us all know how that goes for you when you find yourself broke and homeless and left alone out on the street in the rain.

I swear to you, my fear of being homeless is seriously the only thing motivating me at times. I refuse to live in a tent or sleep on a bench. But I am also an Artiste and I live to create and I don’t know how else to live aside from Creation.

And no one likes me. I suck at networking and socializing. Everyone always ends up hating me. I’m definitely going to die alone on the street in the rain.

Oh god, I think I might have an anxiety attack. God help me.

I’m sure it would probably help a lot if I just went for a walk and ate something aside from 7/11 snacks and ramen noodles.

🙁 🙁 🙁

BLOG: To Ireland!

Thursday. Here we are at the coffee shop. I am finally sitting inside today. We agreed it was better in case that crazy Aussie guy comes back.

I received some very exciting news yesterday: I was accepted into the Irish Studies program in Galway this summer. Yes, yes, I know, it’s very exciting, but this is only Part 1. I still have another application out for a full-year program I am completing right now. The real celebration will come if and when I finally get my Letter to Hogwarts!

The summer program is only for a month. That’s not going to be enough time for me. I need at least a full year. I decided to start researching Masters programs again and found some good options. I’ve realized that I just want to get it done already. I feel like I’m not going to be able to get ahead in my career until I get my Masters Degree. I’ve always wanted one, I just… had some rejections and a few opportunities that didn’t quite work out.

Maybe this one will work out since I’m already in! That’s what I’m hoping for. Then I can magically find a place to live (which I hear is very hard in Ireland right now) and not move anywhere again for a full year, or longer. I’ll just study and work in a coffee shop and learn Irish and write.

I can always come back to Hong Kong to if I want to. The door is now open to me forever because I’ve already lived here. I’m in da Club. I can come back any time. Ideally, next time I would like to be more prepared on a professional level. It’s really hard to get started here on my own. I just feel so lost all the time. School is a better option. I need the structure.

All of this being said, I am excited to go to Ireland. I’m gonna take courses on Irish History, Irish Society, and Irish Language. I’m excited to add another language to my ever-growing repertoire. Hopefully I’ll be much better at it than I am at Thai or Cantonese. Lol, I know, I know. Hey, I know the basics of getting around town! It’s not that bad! But I could also be trying harder, lol. Personally, I think I’m better at Hindi than both of those combined, but I was also in a relationship with an Indian man for a year, so…

Right now I’m trying to find a good spot to write my application essays in. This coffee shop is too loud. The library is too intense. The rooftop I was chillin’ on is too casual. My home studio works okay, but I do get a bit claustrophobic if I stay in there for too long. I can’t imagine trying to live here during Covid. I can’t even last 12 hours in there before popping over to 7/11. I would have lost my goddamn mind.

I’ve been doing some research on living in Ireland. It looks like it has the exact same problems literally everywhere else in the world does: high cost of living, housing shortage, stagnant low wages. Grand.

I have started looking at the housing situation. It’s definitely bad, but it’s not Hong Kong bad. Once you deal with the harsh, unforgivable realities of the Hong Kong housing market, everything else looks like a piece of cake in comparison.

Well, I’m dealing with the exact same issue here in Hong Kong, as I was before in the USA. It is what it is. It’s really about what I make of the opportunity in the end. If all else fails, I can always give up on life and go waste away in Thailand forever, lol.

There is no winning anywhere in this world right now. Everyone everywhere is drowning. There is no hope for the future. Might as well try to learn about my family heritage while I’m on my way out, I guess. It’s what my grandmother and father would want.

I always felt like I tried so hard to make something out of living in South Dakota. I traveled, I learn about Native American history and culture, I started this blog, I wrote so many stories, I followed around Mad Dog, took a lot of classes online, became a yoga teacher. In the end, it just wasn’t the right place for me. The people there are so, so, so toxic. I am grateful every day I left that world behind forever. I never, ever have to go back there ever again.

Ugh, I am feeling overwhelmed right now. I need to take a break. I am trying to do research online but everyone is SO NEGATIVE ALL THE TIME. The housing market sucks. The job market sucks. Everything sucks everywhere.

Like, yes, we know, the world sucks. Everything sucks. It is what it is!

Well, it’s fine. My ancestors survived crossing the ocean to come to America just to be treated like shit and discriminated against and denied jobs and housing. Somehow they still made it work. I’m sure I can survive one year in a dilapidated Irish boarding house by the seaside in Ireland proper.

I’ve got it pretty good compared to my ancestors, so, whatever. At least I don’t have to work down by the docks or toil away in the factories or camp out in the woods for weeks at a time to avoid getting caught by the feds for illegal rum-running between the US and Canada during prohibition. That’s a true story, btw!

Maybe I’ll just find myself one of these big strapping Irish lads with lots of property he inherited from his grandmother and make him some tea and then cozy up by him next to the fire place on a rainy, windy, foggy day after the car breaks down in the mud and he comes home drenched from head to toe and shivering cold. Then I will enchant him by whispering the magic words every Irishman wants to hear directly into his ear: “I know the recipe for my great-great-grandmother’s traditional Irish stew.”

It’ll be just like in the movies! 😀

Yeah, that doesn’t sound so bad to me…

Housing crisis, schmousing crisis. Reality cannot interfere with my romcom fantasy dream life!

Except for when it inevitably does…

Whatever, don’t interrupt me while I’m fantasizing! I have an award-winning romance series to pen. Everyone loves hot Irish guys in cozy sweaters, okay?! These are just facts!

Alright, well, I am going to quit reading all of this negativity on reddit and finish my essays. It goes…

161 years ago, my family looked around the famine-ridden nation of Ireland and said, “Fuck this shit, we’re going to America!”

Now, six generations later, their totally disillusioned American descendant is getting right back on that boat and saying, “Fuck this shit, I’m going back to Ireland!”

*sings*

It’s the circleeeeeeee, the circle of liiiiiife!

*ba dum*

BLOG: Fragrant Harbour

Tuesday morning. On the rooftop with an insta-coffee I picked up at the market around the corner. I am taking a break from the coffee shop in case that crazy Aussie guy comes back.

Sometimes I sit here and look around and think, “Wow, I can’t believe I’m just out here living in Hong Kong.” Wild. Pre-pandemic me could have never conceived of this, like ever. Most days I can’t believe it’s real.

Overall, I love Hong Kong! It’s a great town. So vibrant and full of life. Somehow there is still hope for a better future in the air. I love the Fragrant Harbour, my little neighborhood cafe, walking up and down the steps, and taking all the escalators in between.

Vibes.

I remember when I first came here and I was totally overwhelmed by everything. I totally had a meltdown. Since then I’ve learned how to find my own way through SEA. Now I get to chill for a bit and just enjoy living here. I feel like I’ve finally adjusted to the Hong Kong Lifestyle now. Maybe. Sort of. It’s very fast-paced and I still get lost sometimes, but somehow I’m managing to survive.

Okay, the rent is paid up for two months now. I am ready to get down to business and write. I have two pieces I need to work on ASAP. Both of them have to do with Ireland. One of them is my story “The Four Irishmen of Bangkok,” which is going to be sent off somewhere very special. Obviously, the title speaks for itself on that one.

Hopefully things will go according to plan. I really want to go to Ireland. I can always come back to find a new job in Hong Kong. I am here now, so I will use the time I have left to keep doing what I’m doing.

What am I doing? I don’t know. I’m just going with it. Can you believe I’ve been abroad for almost 10 full months now? Crazy. I always believed I could, but I never expected to split my time between Hong Kong and Bangkok. Nor did I expect to study yoga in India and Bali. Now I feel more like someone I can take seriously when I look in the mirror.

Must get to work now. I need to get both of these pieces done by the end of the week. The creative one is still stewing, so to speak. The other is a personal essay, which I should be able to just bang out considering I’m in the habit of writing every day.

Wish me luck!

BLOG: MAusGA

Monday.

Hungover after an unexpected run-in with some Aussies last night. I ended up getting very wine drunk, which is never a good thing. I have no idea how I got home with my groceries intact.

I remember being out at this random bar, then I remember being home, but I don’t remember anything in between. Did I walk? Did that Canadian call me a cab? No idea. Safe to say I should be extra weary if and when the Aussies invite me to sit with them at the bar again.

This caught me completely off-guard. I was taking a photo of the city at the night and this old Aussie guy called out to me from the patio of the bar nearby.

“Why are you taking a picture if you aren’t in it? Let me take your picture for you.”

I let him take the picture for me. It turned out pretty great. This is how they roped me in. He was sitting with another Aussie and a Canadian. All of them were Boomers, for certain. They had all lived in Hong Kong for several decades. This is the first I’ve met of the “Old Hong Kong” Expat Crowd here in Hong Kong itself. I met some of the Good Ol’ Boys back in Bangkok, but they had all moved on long ago. This group was still fresh.

The Aussie asked me if I was American. I said yes. He proudly stood up and stated, “I LOVE TRUMP! We are MAGA: Make Australia Great Again!”

Oh Jesus Christ. What did I just walk into?

I could have walked away, but my curiosity got the better of me on this one. I had to know what in the fuck this means to them. As they explained it, they don’t want Freedom. They don’t want Independence. They want to depose the British Monarchy and install Trump as their King.

…

Right.

I swear to you, this is totally real. I know, I know. It sounds absolutely insane. That’s because it is insane. Totally and completely insane.

Oh, but stick with me. Their story gets better…

They think that by making Trump their King, it will bring back the golden days of Ye Olde British Empire, where they all profited directly off the imperialist colonial capitalism model.

They are not alone in this quest. They have forged a secret alliance with Canada behind the backs of the UK government. Brexit was too much for them, apparently.

Also, guns. They want guns. Specifically to stockpile lots and lots of guns the way Americans do. And they are “tired of being woke about Aborigines.” I’m sure you can imagine what kind of insanely racist rant ensued from there.

The Aussie then loudly and excitedly proclaimed to the entire hillside that he hoped Trump would drop a nuke on Iran, then cackled gleefully as he chugged down the last of his wine.

Now you can understand how I ended up blacking out from too much Australian wine. This was probably one of the more insane things I’ve seen or heard while at SEA, and as we all know, I have seen and heard a lot of very insane things on this journey. Bangkok ain’t got nothing on this, lol.

So that was my evening. As I said, I do not remember how I got home, but I do remember that the Canadian was kind enough to offer to call a taxi for me. Perhaps that is what happened. Who knows? It’s a mystery.

Now I am just sitting here laughing about what they told me. It’s really funny when you think about it. These Baby Boomers want Trump to be King of Canada and Australia. Like, what? That just sounds made up. I could never make that shit up, ever. I am not creative enough for that. It’s just so hilarious to me, lol.

Ridiculous.

BLOG: What Are You, An Irish Dock Worker?

Sunday afternoon.

Currently sitting at a very lovely outdoor cafe in the Mid-Levels. Everyone in here right now is French. It’s a whole vibe.

I got dressed up in my “work attire” (long skirt and a sweater) to come here and write today. Apparently I missed the memo that Sundays are Casual Sundays for Westerners. Everyone I’ve seen out today is dressed in athleisure or t-shirts/jeans/baseball caps.

Somehow I can just never get it quite right, no matter how hard I try.

I literally look like I just came from church compared to everyone else. Ugh. Somehow the French always get me. Always.

Sorted out my apartment situation, so I’m good to stay in one spot until my visa expires. What’s the plan in the meantime? Busy myself as much as I can, as always. Sending out job applications feels like tossing my CV into a paper-shredder and watching it turn to spaghetti live in real time. It is what it is. I finally stopped taking it so personally.

I’m still working on editing my latest manuscript. It’s a monster, as I’ve said. Very frustrating. There’s also my new blog, which has taken approximately 5 years longer to manifest than I initially guessed. At least it’s finally happening. It’s just taken me so long to get there, ugh. I feel like I’ve completely missed the boat on this project. It should have been done 10 years ago.

Oh well. I know I will feel better once it’s finally online. As I’ve said before, it’s an achievement thing. I don’t care how it takes to get there as long as I finally get there.

I decided to use this opportunity to finish a Coding Bootcamp I started during the pandemic but never finished. It’s very easy to go to the Central Library and spend the day grinding out whatever I need to be working on. I find I really absorb that next-level ridiculous level of discipline and productivity that only Chinese people have. I feel pretty confident I can finish the course on a shorter deadline if I make a proper habit out of it.

I guess if the world ends tomorrow, I should like to think I spent the last of it very productively, living in one of the most exciting cities in the world, always working towards bettering myself even when there is no hope on the horizon. I mean, really, can you think of anything better than spending the Apocalypse in one of the most beautiful libraries in the entire world? I can’t, honestly.

Sometimes I want to give up, but now that I’ve been researching my Irish ancestors, I can only think of how sad and poor and desperate they were as they boarded that ship to America with hopes and dreams, only to find themselves discriminated against and struggling harder than ever while they slaved away at the factories and the docks. And they did all of that for me, their legacy, so that I could live in a bright, beautiful, vibrant city like Hong Kong and have access to the best education in the world and make something respectable of myself.

And I am actively failing all of them by wasting away in bed feeling like I have no purpose or reason to live. Ridiculous. Shame. Shame on me. I must use this opportunity as best I can, even if I have to go broke doing it. This isn’t just about me. It’s about bringing honor to my family who abandoned the destitute, dying potato fields for something better.

Wow, I have no idea where that just came from, but damn. Dat Ye Olde immigrant guilt trip game strong. What other choice to do I have now?

That sounds like it came from my dad, actually. And my grandmother. My grandmother always used to say she wished she could have gone to university and studied literature and poetry and traveled the world, and not have to have gotten married or have a million kids, but she couldn’t because her family was Irish and poor, so she had to learn a trade and go to nursing school, and she did all of it for me so I could become a writer, and not get married, or have a million kids, and how dare I waste away an opportunity like this?

I accept this spiritual guilt trip for exactly what it is.

It’s fine. It is what it is.

It is what it is.

BLOG: That Unraveled Fast

Saturday afternoon.

Good News: Finally got my housing situation sorted out. I don’t have to move until my visa expires in June AND I’m getting a rental discount. Hurrah! This also comes with the very nice bonus of more rooftop chats with my hot neighbor. Now I just have to clean and get everything organized so I don’t have to worry about anything for the next 2-3 months, at least.

Bad News: The baristas at my coffee shop say the Aussie Guy is creeping around the coffee shop looking for me. They also say he’s been harassing one of the girls working there as well. I asked them if he was still wearing the same outfit. They were like, “Yeah! Do you think he’s homeless?”

They say they want to get him banned for harassing both the staff and the customers. They actually take that kind of thing seriously out here. It’s refreshing to see.

In the meantime, I am taking care of lots of very boring things. Specifically, my financial situation. I definitely feel like I’m drowning, but I’m trying to be optimistic over here.

For example, I sat down and calculated my average monthly cost of rent over my year abroad and was pleasantly surprised to see it came to about $1500 USD/month. That is the average, so all of it added together and divided by 11. That was about what I expected/budgeted for. I’ve just been sloppy in keeping my accounts.

The 12th month on my financial calendar accounts for random short-term travel and stupid mistakes that have cost me unexpected amounts of money. I call “the learning difficult life lessons the hard way tax.” Make sure you have the ability to absorb any potential financial damage of this nature before planning to live/travel abroad long-term.

I am actually spending less now on rent in Hong Kong than I am in Bangkok, but my apartment is a tiny shoebox with a shower over the toilet and no fancy amenities. The cost of this apartment is actually decreasing over time because the landlords prefer long-term stays and incentivize accordingly.

In Bangkok I was living in a loft in a luxury high-rise building with all the extras. I noticed the cost of that place actually increased over time. By the time I left, it appeared they were transitioning from hotel to co-op and leasing/selling apartments for the longer term. Should I ever return to Bangkok, I will not be staying there again. I can get a better deal elsewhere.

Somehow I’m exactly where I thought I’d be, even though I wasn’t planning for it. Still need to get it all together. I’m giving myself grace for the learning process here.

So here I am, trying to be a responsible account and keep my financial accounts, and here comes Mr. Aussie FinLaw Bro, ready to fuck up my day.

OMG

This entire coffee shop situation is unraveling fast. First the Aussie showed up drunk as a skunk. He is SLOPPY AF! It’s 2:30pm in the afternoon! He literally walked up to my table and slammed a tall boy from 7/11 down in front of me. He is clearly, visibly drunk. Like definitely “On A Bender” drunk. Now he is just standing/sitting/loitering here in front of my table at the cafe.

Maybe he is actually homeless. He’s definitely giving homeless vibes. Perhaps he is in the middle of a nervous breakdown brought on by too much ketamine and cocaine. I feel like there is a name for that here. I have to look it up though. I guess it’s called a Calvin Klein. Hmm. I heard it’s a very common cocktail choice for the businessmen here.

The baristas’ solution was to send a regular customer out to sit with me. Now I am trapped inside this tiny little alcove being guarded by two different men, neither of whom I want in my space right now.

I am desperately trying to keep a straight face right now, but it is not working. I’m just trying to pretend everything is totally normal and drink my coffee fast. This is too much for me right now!

Okay, time to go back home and clean up my apartment. Motivation found!

BLOG: Have You Ever Wrangled a Scorpion?

Friday afternoon. Very late in the day. Working at the coffee shop.

I did not do much writing today. I mainly focused on completing and submitting an application for a summer study program in Ireland. It’s all done and sent off now. Wish me luck!

As much as I love Hong Kong, I am really starting to feel a major pull towards Ireland. I think I should just go there. I spent some time researching my options and decided this short summer study program might be the best way in. I can take classes on Irish history, culture, and language, learn about my family’s history, and possibly get recommendations for my graduate school applications.

No idea where I’m going to get the money for this. I guess I’ll just have to go begging to my family again for it. Ugh. So low. The lowest of the low. This is why I need to go back to school; so I can finally set myself up with a proper career instead of floating around in the SEA.

I figure… I can always come back to Hong Kong. It’s a very special little club. Once you’re in, you’re in.

In the meantime, there have been some interesting men floating around to entertain me. I saw that Aussie guy again yesterday. I caught him walking down my street by my apartment yesterday. I knew as soon as I saw him passing by my door that he was looking for me. I realized too late I was already holding my keys in my hands. Dead giveaway.

He does not live in this neighborhood, by the way. He says he stays somewhere on the other side of the island over by the beach. That’s a long way to trek down to Central…

Yes, he was still wearing the exact same outfit as he has been wearing every time I’ve seen him. I called him out on it and he said, “I swear I’ve laundered it! I’m all nice and clean for you now.”

Sadly I have not seen him today, otherwise I would say to him, “We really need to get you out of those clothes.” And leave him to puzzle over whether or not I’m making a double entendre. I am.

It’s easy to mess with him and just disappear on him. He’s not very straightforward with me, which I find annoying. He’s very vague, like “Are you gonna stay here all afternoon?”

No, I have things to do. Why can’t you just ask me out on a proper dinner date instead of running around with your finlaw bros in Wan Chai all night?

Answer: Because I am 99% sure he is married and lying to me about it! He wants to go there, but he can’t because there’s something holding him back. We know what that thing is: ye olde ball and chain.

Next time I see him, I am just going to say to him, “Bro, here is my question for you: Have you ever wrangled a scorpion?”

“What?

“I heard Aussies are pretty good at that. You know, handling dangerous, venomous creatures.”

“…”

“Do you want to give it a go? I might be inclined to give you the opportunity to do so if you’re honest with me about your situation and compensate me fairly for my time.”

Hahahaha!

I’m just kidding. I think he said he was going back to Australia. Alas! That is fine with me. I actually have a back-up plan.

His name is Neighbor Guy. He lives right next door to me. He’s a British Hong Konger. So, local. He’s really hot. Total beefcake bro. Very, very chill. Adorable little posh accent. Hawt!!!

I met him on my rooftop. We keep startling each other by accident. It’s become a little inside joke. He gave me some information I needed the other day, so now we are friends. I saw him last night and he was like, “I guess we will be seeing more of each other now.”

I hope so. You need a roommate? So do I. How would you like to move out to the outer Islands with me and split that exorbitant rent price in half by two? Hahaha.

It’s very dry out here on my Island this season. I’m getting very thirsty. One of these guys is gonna have to put up or shut up…

BLOG: Lady, Interrupted

Thursday.

At the coffee shop. One of my barista friends was so happy to see me when I came in. She was like, “OMG you are literally the first normal person to come in here today. All morning it’s been tourists! They just keep getting weirder and weirder. And then they treat us like we are the problem! What is that about?”

I am going to go out on a limb and guess the tourists in question are either Mainlanders or Russians. Everyone knows Mainlanders have some very specific, very strange behaviors that distinguish them from HongKongers. It’s fun to observe from afar. It’s not so fun when you’re right in the middle of a large group of them.

As for the Ruskies, well… I had my own unfortunate encounter with some tourists last night. It was… yeah.

I was not originally planning to go out last night because of my hangover. I was comfortably settled into bed watching movies when my friend messaged me out of nowhere and asked if I wanted to go out. It was about 10:30pm at this point. She is the one who I was supposed to go out with on St. Patrick’s Day, but she wasn’t feeling up to it.

We met up in Central around 11pm and walked around looking for a quiet place to chat. We found a super cute cocktail bar with an interior straight outta the palace of Versailles. Loved it! We were sitting there chatting and having a good time. That was when the Russians invaded.

A large group of them came in and flooded this tiny little place at once. All of them were wearing those stupid Leprechaun hats. They had clearly already been drinking for some time. They were loud and obnoxious and totally ruined the vibe. One of them even started doing Ye Olde Cossack Dance in the middle of the room. Don’t get me wrong; she was good as hell, but this was neither the time nor the place for such rowdiness.

We finished our drinks and relocated to a different place around the corner. It was still too loud. Neither of us were in the mood for that level of overstimulation. Either way, I was happy just to be there with her. It’s so refreshing to finally have a female friend I can just chill out and vibe with. I get so tired of being surrounded by men.

I really enjoyed hanging out with her last night. She reminds me to be grateful for this opportunity. I know I complain about my family all the time, but I do acknowledge the fact that they have helped me out financially A LOT. I just wish they wouldn’t be so fucking mean about it all the time. It’s essentially like getting paid to put up with constant verbal and emotional abuse. I just don’t want to listen to it anymore.

Literally, all I’m asking them to do is read my frickin’ blog. Read one of my stories. Just one time. Read a story! See where your money is actually going! Just one time! Bare minimum: acknowledge this website exists. Read a story. Stop saying crazy, unhinged shit like, “You’re not a REAL writer!” Yes, I am.

Do you even know how many men in Bangkok are angry with me right now because of the things I’ve written? How is that not real? And what about Bloody Mary’s? What about all the shit I stirred up when I was writing that? Furthermore, I am recognized and remembered as “Betsey Horton the Writer” everywhere I go. Everywhere. I can talk to someone for 20 minutes at a random bar in a place like Hong Kong, disappear for 3 months, come back, and be recognized STRAIGHT AWAY!

How is that not real? That is literally how celebrities are made! I didn’t choose this life. It chose me! People remember me. They remember my stories. I can’t wrap my head around their reasoning for pretending my entire body of work doesn’t exist.

Literally all my grandmother and aunt do is READ. You would think they would actually sit down and read what I have to write instead of shitting all over me and tearing me down all the time and pretending like I’m somehow different than Virginia Woolf or Jane Austen.

Virginia Woolf literally said, “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” She wrote a whole book about it! You think I haven’t read that shit?! Come on! Who do you think inspired me to do this in the first place?! The worst part is… I know they’ve read Virginia Woolf too!

They literally act like I sit around doing nothing all day and that’s not true! Yes, I need an editor. Yes, I need an agent. Yes, I need connections and job opportunities and a variety of other things I don’t have. I’m not there yet.

I need better stories than whatever garbage I was writing when I lived in South Dakota. I have the stories. I am overwhelmed with stories. I need an editor who is going to sit down with me and seriously help me sort of the stories. I am trying to find this person. It hasn’t happened yet. In the meantime, just lay off of me already, would you?!

This is all coming up for me because my selections for my double feature movie night yesterday were Lady Bird (which I had never seen) and Girl, Interrupted (which I have not watched in about 20 years). Lady Bird is basically the most accurate depiction I’ve ever seen in media of my relationships with my mother, aunt, and grandmother.

Girl, Interrupted is… a little more complicated than that. When I watched the movie and read the book for the first time, I was literally in and out of a hospital like that because I was struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts. It was meaningful to see the struggles of myself and those around me glamourized onscreen by the likes of Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, and Brittany Murphy.

While I could relate to some of it when I was 17, I did not have the understanding of mental illness that I have now. I had not found my way “out” yet. I would argue that I did not get “out” until last year when I got the job in Hong Kong and ran for my fucking life. Sometimes I feel like I’m still “in” that place, metaphorically speaking.

That’s why they call it the Hotel California. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

Here is another reason I am upset with Hermes. I recognized him from the Hotel California the first time I met him. We all know each other here, even when we are total strangers. He kept commenting on the fact that he noticed I had what he referred to as “prison behaviors.” I always sit with my back to the wall, facing the room, watching the door, monitoring who comes in and who comes out. He does the same thing. He learned how to do it when he was in prison to stay safe. Same, same. The only difference is that I was in a hospital.

I am quite open about this particular aspect of my history because I think it’s important to erase the shame and stigma around mental illness and encourage others to get the help they need. However, I was not quite so willing to share this information with a total stranger in Bangkok who walks around telling everyone he’s with the IRA (he’s not). He basically wormed his way in and gained enough trust for me to explain this to him, and then he turned around and used it against me.

Not cool, bro! Totally not cool!

So yeah, I think it’s only fair to put that image up and make him look at his own lie directly in the face. I hope he really takes the time to sit with that and think about the consequences of his behaviors towards others. As previously stated, he is such a little shit! He needs a wake up call. That’s why I say… next time I’m coming back with the Big Spoon. I could do so much worse than this. You got off easy this time, friend. Don’t do it again.

Ultimately, I think of him as my weird Black Sheep cousin from the North who nobody wants to talk to or about. I see him in a very childlike way, in spite of the fact that he is slightly older than me. He is very, very young in my mind. Like a Peter Pan type. Just living it up in Never, Never Land, totally unwilling to ever grow up.

I could never relate to Wendy until now. I had fun on my little adventure in Thailand, but ultimately I chose to leave because I knew it was time for me to grow up. Strange metaphor to make.

In my heart, I know I will always think of the Irishmen I met in Bangkok as my spiritual family. I’ve got my crazy uncle from Dublin who drinks too much and randomly imparts wisdom and knowledge when I need it. He taught me so much about my history and culture already.

Then we have the Moose, who is my weird cousin from way out in the country. Then the Hot Beef Stew, who I was attracted to the vague familiarity of him, only to discover much, much later that he is a distant cousin. Distant enough that it’s not totally gross, but still close enough to be inappropriate. Also, he is married, so No. Definitely not, No. And then Hermes, who, as previously stated, is the Black Sheep cousin from the North.

And there you have it: my first Irish fam. They taught me so much about myself. They inspired me to learn who I am and where I came from. Forget going back to Thailand! Put me on a plane straight to Ireland! I want to learn the Irish language and dig through the archives looking for my family and learn how to drive a stick shift so I can roam around County Cavan.

Yeah, forget the stag hunting. I’m going digging for my family history. I feel very strongly that my Irish Grandmother has tasked me with this. I have been doing my Ancestry work and it’s the Irish side that is completely missing from the tree. The only way I can get the information I need is to go there and dig through the library.

I feel like Indiana Jones running all over the map of the world right now. I remember this time last year, before I was offered the job that brought me to Asia, when I was deep in meditation and asking for a sign. I saw my dad appear holding his old globe that I saved from his office. I heard the theme song playing and watched the red lines appear, tracing a trail all over the world.

My barista friend just came out for a cigarette break and a chat. She asked me if I’m going back to Thailand. I said, “No, I need a break. I need to take some space from whatever shit I stepped in over there.”

She nodded and said, “Are you sure they’re not tracking you here in Hong Kong?”

“Oh, probably.”

“Aren’t you afraid they’re going to come here and find you?”

“Not really, no.”

“Why not?”

“I’m just… not.”

I have my own reasons for this. First of all, I haven’t actually written anything that bad. These men just can’t handle being told they’re acting like misogynist jerks by an American woman. That’s why they all fled the West and came to Thailand.

Second, I don’t think Hermes can actually leave the country. Even if he could, he’s a bit tied up at the moment taking care of his sick water buffalo. He’s all about posturing anyway. There are plenty of people higher up than him on the food chain who don’t consider me to be a threat to them. I doubt that’s going to be a significant problem.

As for Uncle Jason… seriously, like, whatever, bro. I literally do not care who he is or what he does. I am not interested. Sure, I have some vague notion of what he does, but I’ve decided to conveniently look the other way. I must busy myself with more important tasks instead.

Ultimately, I just wanted to teach Hermes a lesson. Most of them will agree he needs a good whack on the arse. Next time I’m coming back with the Big Spoon! Ya heard?!

Phew! That was A LOT! Time to quit writing for the day and tend to my other tasks. You know, like checking out this total beefcake who just walked by carrying something that looks like a lacrosse stick. I think that’s one of the GAA sports, isn’t it? Don’t they have something that looks like lacrosse? Yeah, that’s why the Irish and the Native Americans get along like peanut butter and jelly. They’re playing the same game, but the sticks look a bit different. It’s a whole thing.

See, this is what I’m talking about. Nobody cares about you, Uncle Jason. I’m not interested in your English bullshit, okay? I’m tired of being English. I’ve been English my whole life. I’m over it. I want to be Irish now. So I need to go learn about the Gaelic sports and watch some hot men run around a field with large sticks. Okay? Okay.

And she lived happily ever after.

BLOG: Minstrel Show, Horror Movie, or Both?

Wednesday. Hungover AF.

If you read my post yesterday and thought to yourself, “This isn’t going to go the way she thinks it’s going to go,” Congratulations! You’re right!

I set myself up for disappointment. You would think I’d know better at age 37. Everyone knows there is a reason why those of us who have worked as bartenders call St. Patrick’s Day “Amateur Night.” This is one day a year when people feel they have an excuse to be their worst selves. They put on that stupid fucking Leprechaun hat and go buck wild. It has nothing to do with celebrating Ireland or Irish culture or history itself. Most people treat it like an excuse to get trashed.

The first thing I did was go out for a bit o’ stew at the Irish pub I visit once a week to get my fix. It is, as far as I am aware, the only traditional Irish pub left in Hong Kong. Someone who has lived here since before the pandemic explained to me that there used to be many more, but they’ve all closed up shop.

Hong Kong is currently having a huge issue with small businesses closing up because landlords are driving rent prices up. It’s a whole thing. The manager at the adorable little coffee shop I am sitting at right now was actually just complaining to me about it yesterday.

That aside, this pub is located in an area that has become VERY touristy since the pandemic. It used to be a super chill spot where locals and expats mixed more, but now it mainly caters to tourists. Needless to say, this pub quickly filled up with tourists.

I was planning to cross back to the Island side to go to a different bar to meet my friend, but she canceled last minute. I did not feel safe going to a rowdy bar full of male athletes alone, so I chose to stay where I was. This was a mistake. I should have just sucked it up and gone out stag hunting on my own, but I was too crushed by losing my wing woman to move from my seat.

Furthermore, the staff at this pub already know me. They can help me out of trouble if need be. The staff at the other place don’t know me. I would be on my own. It was a serious safety concern for me. It is what it is.

Anyway, so there I was, at the pub, eating my stew and drinking a half pint of Guinness. As previously stated, I do not usually drink the Guinness. Therefore, I was not familiar with the potential effect it could have on me. As a professional writer, I drink quite a lot. I am familiar with how various alcoholic beverages affect me. Wine drunk is different than bourbon drunk, which is different from beer drunk, and especially, Absinthe drunk.

I felt Guinness belonged in its own category, especially after I drank one whole pint of it on Saturday night and realized the character formerly known as the “Hot Beef Stew” looks uncomfortably like my cousin (who I have not seen or spoken to in many, many years). To say I was concerned about how it might affect me while surrounded by total strangers in an understatement. Ultimately, I decided to cancel the stag hunt and conduct a scientific experiment on myself instead.

The first thing I noticed was that the Guinness was not having a very strong effect on me. It probably has to do with the fact that I had just eaten a giant plate of Irish stew and mashed potatoes, which was a good choice. But then I kept drinking and nothing. Then more nothing. And then more nothing. I didn’t feel a goddamn thing!

That is, until some random American guy sat down next to me and started chatting me up. OF COURSE HE WAS MARRIED! THEY ARE ALWAYS MARRIED! WHY ARE THEY ALWAYS MARRIED?! RAWRRRR!

I clocked the ring as soon as he sat down and was like, “Lord, please, don’t waste my fucking time conversing with me.” As if hearing my thoughts, he shoved his left hand into the pocket of his hoodie, turned to me, and started chatting away, as Americans oh-so-famously are wont to do. GRAND!

He spent the first half of the conversation with his left hand in said pocket, as if he had convinced himself he could hide it from me long enough to keep me engaged. I just sat there the whole time thinking to myself, “Why me? I need to go visit one of those witches under that bridge in Causeway Bay and get whatever bizarre curse this is lifted off of me forever.”

Of course, I am 37, so realistically my best bet at this age is someone who is divorced. I definitely don’t want to be with a younger guy, as I already tried that with my Indian ex-boyfriend and felt more like a mommy/babysitter than a partner. I also don’t want a man who is over 40 and has never been married, because that means there is something wrong with him. I don’t want to have to be the one who breaks him in, as they say, because I was already broken at a very young age and fixed myself. I ain’t got time for that shit. As Ali Wong says, “I want a man who has been pre-yelled at.” It’s a real thing.

So blah blah blah, he was talking about AI or some other dumb shit I didn’t care about, and then he got an appetizer plate and offered me food straight from the fucking plate like we were on some kind of date. The AUDACITY of these married men! It’s outrageous! I was very angry to have my time wasted like that once again. I really need to learn how to tell married men to fuck all the way off and leave me alone. Boundaries, Betsey. Boundaries!

Finally, he went away, and I was left alone to continue my Guinness experiment. The tab said I only had three half pints, but I know for a fact that’s bullshit. I had at least three before this guy sat down, then maybe two or three more during that wretched conversation, and then a couple more after that. Must have been the faeries out here buying me free dranks because I deserve them, or something. The bartenders kept asking me if I wanted one of those stupid hats and I refused by saying, “No thank you. I don’t need one. I am real.”

Anyway, so I drank all that, and then got up to go to the bathroom. I felt nothing. Nothing at all! I definitely felt a little… duller… maybe, but I could still walk straight and speak well. It didn’t affect me at all. At least, I thought it didn’t, until I came out of the bathroom and looked around the room. In that moment I felt like I was watching a minstrel show. It was horrifying.

It was like the Guinness had given me some kind of clarity of vision. All I could see was the horrifying reality that my people and culture (which I have barely even scratched the surface of learning and understanding) had been reduced to nothing more than this gross stereotype of a singing, dancing, drinking leprechaun. It was horrifying. I literally felt like I had walked straight into a horror movie.

So I did what anyone in this position would do: I upgraded to the Jameson. I had two doubles to numb myself down, paid my tab, and then left. I came back over to the Island side and wandered through LKF. It was more of the same. Just some horror movie minstrel show bullshit. I literally just could not even.

I walked to the cantina to find a safe space. My friend wasn’t working, but her aunties were. They gave me the safe space I needed in that moment. They didn’t ask me any questions or talk to me at all. They just welcomed me in with a hug, gave me a free drink and let me sit at the bar alone with my face in my hands.

After they closed, I walked home alone, as I do every night. I struggled to fall asleep and stay asleep. I tossed and turned all night. When I finally woke up from whatever half-trance I was in, I felt heavier than I’ve felt in awhile. Sure, some of it is the hangover, but most of it just feels like the weight of the world resting on my shoulders.

I just thought to myself, “St. Patrick’s Day is the worst day to be Irish. Every other day of the year, it’s grand. But today? Ugh. No.” Then I realized I should just get on a plane and go straight to fucking Ireland. What am I even doing here right now?

And that’s the story of how I didn’t get what I wanted, but definitely got what I needed.
