BLOG: Wild Farang Night Out

Sunday.

Sitting here at the coffee stand, watching traffic go by. It is true what they say:: the congestion is particularly bad this time of year. I learned last night to always carry a scarf after two motorbike rides through the streets of Bangkok at various times of night. It was almost impossible to breathe.

I am still not 100% about the motorbike, but I’ve learned how to do it. It’s definitely not my preferred method of transportation, but I can manage it now. Three months ago, the thought of it still made me panic. Now, not so much, but still not my favourite method.

I went out with some friends last night for a so-called “Wild Farang Night Out.” It was just the three of us drinking with some old guy who has a big house. Then we went around the corner to get food and more beer at one of the few places that wasn’t closed for Election Day. Not exactly what you would call “legendary,” but fun nonetheless.

I asked them about the bar and they said they don’t go there anymore. They say it’s too much drama. There is also a third party on the line who says they do not go there because of the drama. They are right. There is a lot of drama.

One of my friends had been daydrinking already and was thus very obnoxious. It was almost like he was intentionally playing the worst version of himself for his Google spy camera glasses, which were very strange to hold in my own hands. I had to tell him several times to stop making sexual jokes at me, which he did not do. Zero boundaries. Very draining. It’s like he sucked out all of the good energy I had just spent the week accumulating and left me a hollow shell.

By the end of the night, my other friend was becoming weary of the act as well. I once again had a moment of clarity where I realized it truly doesn’t matter what any of these people think of me. Life goes on. I should surround myself with better people in the future.

Am I ready to go back to Hong Kong tomorrow? No, not really, lol. I like the relaxing lifestyle here in Bangkok. But as I’ve said, it does tend to bring out some of my less desirable qualities. Hong Kong pushes me more to be better and succeed, or else you will end up homeless, kind of like I am right now…

*face palm*

Well, I have to make it work, somehow.

Do I have any idea what I’m doing? No! Not a clue! But somehow I am going to make it work!

Okay, let’s go, Hong Kong. Round 3: Year of the Fire Horse. Third time’s a charm. I’m willing to take a bet on this race today!

Or maybe I will just go back to sleep in the magical cloud bed and continue running around with all the riff raff, collecting stories about my escapades at the Mos Eisley Cantina.

Starting Month 9 at SEA… Can you believe I’ve come this far?

My dad would be so proud. Yoga Teacher Trainings in India and Bali. Luxury hotel stays in the Middle East. Living in Bangkok and Hong Kong. Traveling through 10 different countries. Writing stories about the crazy characters I meet through it all. I know he would be very proud of me indeed.

Now, if only I had some sort of idea of what the hell I’m actually doing…

BLOG: The Headache

Saturday morning.

Here we are at the coffee stand after whatever that experience was last night. It was strange, but it is Thailand. What is the point of being here if you do not go out to a full moon party made up of old expat men and hallucinate from drinking the kratom tea?

Now we can check that experience off our bucket list, I suppose. I’m glad I ran all the way home just to vomit in the toilet and then imagine myself entrapped in a giant honeycomb-shaped trap made up entirely of golden goo?

Of all the hallucinations I’ve had while taking various drugs in the last year, that one would probably be ranked at the top for most pleasant experiences. I guess he decided to go for the Gold after all. Well done, man. Well done.

I did run into my Old Irish Uncle last night. I showed him my family tree. He was very happy to hear that he inspired me to go digging for my family. Then he suggested I just fly to Ireland direct. I agree with him on that one.

I asked him if he knew how my dear friend Hermes is doing. He said, “Oh, well, you know how he is.”

“Yes,” I said, “I do know. He is always so busy taking care of everyone else that he takes no time to take care of himself. I always say to him, ‘Hermes, you need to chill out, do some yoga, and eat some butter cookies.’ But he does not listen to me.”

My Uncle looked at me increduously and let out a hearty laugh.

“That is sooooo NOT who he is.”

“Well, maybe it should be.”

He laughed at me again.

As per usual, he asked me if I was “all loved up,” which is apparently Irish for, “Have you gotten laid lately?” I explained that no, I have not been with anyone since my mysterious Irish Guy, aka the Hot Beef Stew.

This is the same man, who, as we all recall, lectured me about “not acting like such a slut” while putting his shorts back home to go see his girlfriend or wife or whatever she is. Sounds like you’re the slutty one here, Mr. Antony.

And so, dear reader, I have not been out “acting like a slut,” mostly because I’m tired of dealing with rakes and scoundrels such as this dirty dog over here. He ruined all of the fun for me.

I did not say any of that to my Uncle, but I did feel it in my heart and soul as I jokingly said, “Oh Uncle, you were right about that handsome Irishmen. I can’t forget that magical night we had. I am a changed woman since. He really lived up to all the hype.”

He gave me an approving nod and said quite seriously, “Ireland better watch out!”

Damn straight.

“It’s good to see you acting more like a Lady,” he said. “Hong Kong has been good to you. Off with you now, then. That’s enough lessons for today. Remember what I taught you: always stand up for yourself, and keep that fire alive inside.”

“Yes, sir.”

“I hope you find your family.”

“Thank you.”

We went back inside, where the mood towards me was chilly, at best. It was fun just to watch them react around me. Mr. Antony’s Friend is definitely making himself obnoxious. He follows me everywhere. He is all up in my beeswax.

Like, what is there to overhear, sir? My list of the Top 10 Best Expat-Owned Restaurants in Hong Kong? My subscription to ClassPass? My difficult search to find a new apartment that isn’t a tiny, dark, cramped, little box?

It’s flattering, to be sure. I can’t even imagine what this Krewe must get up to if they are circling around me like sharks, waiting for the best moment to strike. I’m sure it’s something well beyond my wildest imagination. It would probably be something that only happens in the movies…

This guy absolutely hates me. I don’t even know why! I didn’t even write about him until now. Sorry, I got dickmatized by your man’s lucky charms over here. What I can say? They’re magically delicious?

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this either. I expected him to just fade away like they always do. But not this one. This one oh-so-helpfully pulled out a map of Ireland and sent me off on a wild adventure through Hallmark Channel Original Hallucination Land.

It’s funny to watch Mr. Antony’s Friend react to me. He’s so, so, so serious. The only person I’ve met who was more serious was Mr. Antony. It took forever to get him to crack a smile. He didn’t laugh at any of my jokes. He’s definitely a control freak. I could tell by the way he raised his eyebrow when I suggested he schedule in some sexy time with me.

I guess I don’t know what they are all so serious about. I am a reasonable person. My silence can be bought. You just need to provide me with the financial compensation I require to be able to afford not to move forward with this book. It really is quite simple. You just have to put an offer on the table.

Anyway, we’re not here to negotiate. We’re here to go to the spa, which I already did yesterday. It was quite lovely. I did the sauna, scrub, aromatherapy, hot stone, and Thai massage. Feelin’ brand new AF.

Now I need to get my nails done. I can get rid of these obnoxious sparkly green extensions and get sparkly gold and Lucky Red for Chinese New Year instead.

Life in Bangkok must be pretty boring if this is what gets their feathers all in a ruffle. Well, it’s all very exciting to me, a person who has been living in the middle of nowhere for way too long. It’s quite like the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars. I love it. Just Grand.

Well, it’s all in good fun, lads. Just chill out. Relax. You’re in Thailand. Start acting like it!

I knew from the moment I met this man that he was going to give me a massive headache. Now, here I am, trying to enjoy my lovely vacation to beautiful Thailand, and all I can do is sit here in agony with this massive fucking headache…

STORY: Trapped in Your Honey Pot

Wow, what was that?

I don’t know, but… personally, I suspect someone put the kratom in my drink.

At first I was just out there testing the vibe, like… okay, I didn’t realize it was this icy, but okay. We’ll handle it diplomatically, like a boss. And then… suddenly… they decided not to handle it so diplomatically.

It’s my fault for being stupid enough to leave my drink unattended. I don’t know what they put in it… but my theory is kratom. The kratom does not agree with me.

First I felt a weird vibe change. My American friend looked at me with a great deal of concern and suggested it was time for me to go. They were talking about me in this way that was worrying to him. He says they have been talking about me.

Just for a moment, I made eye-contact with Mr. Antony’s friend. He had this strange expression I did not understand. My friend looked at me and said, “That guy absolutely hates you.”

“Oh, I know he does,” I said with a smirk. “He was the one who supposed to be on guard duty when the dog got off the leash. Looks like he got into trouble after that night…”

I laughed to myself at my own private in-joke. My friend gave me a strange look again. Suddenly, I felt myself become violently ill. In that moment I knew the evening had been compromised. Now I understood the look…

I laid the money down on the table and ran out as fast as I could. I went to get the antidote from 7-11 and came back to my apartment. I lay down in bed and waited for whatever was going to happen to happen.

Once the sickness had passed, I felt myself fall into a trance. I felt like I was floating on a cloud, then slowly melting down into a sweet, sweet pot of honey. There I was, suspended in goo, floating through time, space, and nothingness. I can only say I felt truly at peace.

I rolled over in bed and opened my eyes. There he was, staring back at me through the void: my hallucination.

“It’s you…”

He looked down at me and shook his head in disappointment.

“You fell into my trap so easily,” he said. “I was surprised. I thought you were so much smarter than that.”

“What can I say? I couldn’t resist the chance that I might see you again…”

“Really?”

“Really. Did you go to all this effort just for me?”

“You noticed that, did you?”

“I did notice that. Wow. All that… just for me? You must be someone really special, huh?”

“What makes me so special to you?”

“I don’t know. Whatever this moment is we’re having right here. This familiar feeling I’ve searched my heart for since that night I held you in my arms. That feeling I found in the hot beef stew, and the cozy sweaters on cloud days, and cuddling up to the memory of you to keep these lonely winter blues away…”

“Am I like your Andrew now?”

“Isn’t that what you wanted to be?”

“Do you think that this is love?”

“No… but it is poetry… sweet, sweet, beautiful poetry…”

I smile at him and place my hand on his heart. Oh sweet, beautiful memory I have of that night. I can’t help but linger on it. I’ve never known the kind of comfort I felt than I did when you wiped my tears away.

“Thank you for inspiring me…”

He shakes his head again as he watches me sink further down into the honeycomb.

“You fell into my trap so easily,” he taunts. “I can’t believe how easily you fell into my trap…”

“There’s nothing to trap, darling. I have nothing of use for you. I am nothing of use to you. I would be more than content to simply stay here forever and write poetry about the color of your eyes.”

“That’s what I thought…”

I nod my head and roll back over before completely blacking out. Some time later, I wake up again. I sit down at my computer and I write the story…

SCRIPT: Under Surveillance, Pt. 2

Meanwhile, at an undisclosed location in Bangkok, Thailand…

An Irishman man with dark curly hair sits in front of a computer screen, looking at his watch impatiently. He taps his foot as he waits for the call to connect. He is Mr. Antony.

Shortly thereafter, the video opens to another handsome Irishman with an earpiece in one ear. He is Hermes.

Side note: All of the men in this feature are played by handsome Irish guys. We got the whole national rugby team to play as background extras. Grand!

Mr. Antony: So, where is she? Where is this so-called ‘Writer Extraordinaire?’

Hermes: Uh, well, I got our guys on every station looking out for her. Nobody has reported in yet. It seems like no one has seen or heard from her in several days. She hasn’t even been to the American Bar.

Mr. Antony: Then what is she doing?

Hermes: It looks like she’s sleeping, sir.

Mr. Antony: Sleeping?

Hermes: Yes. It says here she also booked a trip to the spa.

Mr. Antony: So this information you gave to me earlier? This was false? You brought me bad information? Is this a joke?

Hermes: [holds his hands up] Hey, now, don’t shoot the messenger. That information came straight from her blog and her personal correspondence.

Mr. Antony: So you’re saying SHE is the one who intentionally misled me by publishing a false lead?

Hermes: [starts laughing to himself] Looks like it, sir.

Mr. Antony: Are you messing with me right now?

Hermes: No, but I think she is.

Mr. Antony: She is not very easy to get rid of, is she?

Hermes: No, she is not.

Mr. Antony scoffs at the screen and stands up in a huff. He starts pacing back and forth across the room.

Hermes: If it’s any consolation, I would have warned you away had I been there that night. That one is not what she appears to be. She’s always asking so many questions. Questions about things she knows she shouldn’t be asking about…

Mr. Antony: [waves his hand dismissively] No, no, I’m afraid my mind was set… I just didn’t expect… this.

Hermes: Well, you know what they say about getting into bed with the Americans…

Mr. Antony: Yes… but…

Hermes: … She is Irish. She is one of us.

Mr. Antony: Is she?

Hermes: She could be…

Mr. Antony: She could be…

Hermes: Hmm, well, seems like you need to confront her first about what she’s been writing about you.

Mr. Antony: Yes, I suppose you are right. All of this just for one person. It does seem a bit excessive, in hindsight.

Hermes: You never know…

They sit there in silence together for a minute.

Mr. Antony: Shame about that article turning out to be a fake. I would have read that in a heartbeat.

Hermes: Me too.

Mr. Antony hangs up the call and starts pacing back and forth again.
